He has an 8th Dan (degree) and was awarded the Shodan Black Belt in 1984. In 1986 he went to Osaka, Japan, to study under the legendary Tai Sensei for 2 years. From 1991 - 2003 Stewart established a successful Kempo branch in Takapuna. Several of his 180 regular students achieved the black belt and some are running their own dojo’s now.
With more than 40 years of experience, Stewart has various qualifications and an abundance of knowledge to be able to offer our amazing variety group classes today. Depending on the individual group sizes, our group classes will currently be both located at our residential headquarters dojo and a local school hall in Torbay. Bigger classes may have an assistant instructor to support our chief instructor. Stewart lives with his wife Yoko and Buddy the cat in Torbay. As you can see in the video below, Stewart has a great sense of humor.

What is Sotai Kempo?
Sotai Kempo is a martial art that focuses on both physical and mental training, combining self-defense techniques with philosophical principles. It is closely related to Shorinji Kempo and Kempo Karate. It emphasizes a balanced approach to striking and grappling, including the use of vital nerve points for self-defense. The term “Sotai” in Sotai Kempo refers to paired practice or partner drills, which are integral to the training method. This form of martial art aims to provide a comprehensive system for personal development, health and self-defense.
